Creative Halloween Portrait Photography in Montreal
A handmade velvet witch hat, sewn from fabric gifted by a friend. A crown of flowers, a little imagination, and a warm October day with a wild wind… Sometimes, the simplest ingredients make the most memorable portraits.
Halloween is one of my absolute most favourite times of year to create magical images. This season gives permission to show a little more imagination, whether it's an unusual costume, a handmade accessory, or the chance to bring a character to life for an afternoon. I love when an idea comes together through items made by hand, found objects, and the personality of the person wearing them.
For this session, the wind became part of the experience, moving through the fabric and the landscape and giving the photographs a life of their own. I wasn't interested in creating a perfectly polished Halloween scene. I wanted the portraits to feel like fragments from a story that might exist somewhere between folklore and reality.
Creative Portraits with a Halloween Twist
As a Montreal portrait photographer, I'm drawn to ideas that leave room for interpretation. A witch wandering through the woods, a child wearing a handmade crown, or an adult drawn to darker, more fantastical imagery can each inspire a completely different set of photographs. The costume might be where an idea begins, but the person wearing, embodying that character, it is what makes the portrait their own. It’s a time to play, be authentic, be weird. I love weird.
These sessions are also a way to explore creative portrait photography beyond the familiar studio backdrop. Autumn landscapes, handmade pieces, vintage clothing, family heirlooms, and personal objects can all help shape the atmosphere. I love the balance between planning an image and allowing unexpected things, like the weather or a passing expression, to influence the final images.
Although Halloween is a natural time for this kind of work, imaginative portrait sessions aren't limited to October. Folklore, fairytales, nature-inspired costumes, and unusual personal concepts can be explored throughout the year. Sometimes an idea has been sitting with you for ages, waiting for the right opportunity to become something tangible.
