I think we (grownups) sometimes underestimate the importance of make-believe. How seriously children take it, how much of themselves they bring to the things they create. A crown isn't just a crown when you've made it yourself, it’s a new identity. I've watched shy children come alive in front of my camera when they get to choose who they get become. Not because they suddenly know how to pose, but because posing is no longer the point. They're busy being someone else, or perhaps in reality, a little more of themselves.
