Why Documentary Family Photos Matter (Especially the Beautifully Unscripted Ones)

I first started doing 'Day in the life' sessions a couple of years ago. My very first one was a half day with a family who's toddler, a bundle of energy, discovered that he could spritz himself in the face with mister meant for the seedlings they were planting. He giggled uncontrollably as water dripped down his chin.
Time moves fast—especially when you're raising kids.
One day it’s Legos on the floor and cereal on the couch, the next it’s school projects and hockey practice. Somewhere in between are the tiny moments that make your family yours: belly laughs over breakfast, a quick hug in the hallway, mismatched socks and all.
That’s why I believe in documentary-style family photography—not just for the perfect portraits, but for the honest, in-between moments that show who you are right now. You don’t need matching outfits or a spotless house. In fact, the beauty is in the lived-in, the slightly chaotic and the deeply real.
“Day in the Life” sessions let me spend a few hours (or a full day) with your family, capturing the story as it unfolds naturally. No stiff poses or forced smiles—just your world, your way...
From pancake breakfasts to bedtime stories, these sessions create something more than photos. They create a legacy.
The end result? A visual storybook - filled with your family’s everyday magic. Something tangible your kids can flip through years from now, seeing how much love and laughter surrounded them, relive the moments of daily tenderness and the relationship that is singularly your own.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. And preserving it.
