She was about to leave…

Not in any abstract sense, the tickets had been bought. The apartment in Mile End, which she’d furnished with such care over several years, was ready to welcome the next tenant and she had a few days left in Montreal. Somehow she’d chosen to spend some of them with me.

J. had contacted me a few days earlier for a standard portrait session, but after seeing my flower portraits, she’d had an idea. She was a bit shy about mentioning it to me, she told me. She’d bought a bouquet, just in case I agreed. Just in case.

I often think back on that sentence and the way we put our own desires on hold. So often we women apologise in advance for wanting something creative, something for ourselves, wanting to be as we truly are, just in case, it’s too much. In case you say no. In case you judge. But also just in case we’re worth the effort, the time, the attention.

J. was turning a new leaf after years spent in Montreal, building a community, relationships, a career. She was setting off alone to South America, not to start from scratch, but to continue becoming the version of herself she had purposefully chosen. She wanted to mark this journey of growth and exploration that had led to this moment, when she could finally pursue her dream. She wanted to commemorate it, document it, with flowers.

She chose to honour herself.

She set aside an hour to be in the spotlight, celebrating the woman she had become in this city, in this home.

We took photos in the soft winter light in the living room of her soon to be gone ground floor apartment, arranging the bouquets flowers around her body, in her hands, as a crown.

That's what I'm here for.

If you're in a moment of transition, closing something, opening something, standing at the edge of a big change… you don't have to wait until you've arrived somewhere to be photographed. The in-between is worth documenting too. Maybe especially the in-between.

Portraits for women

If this resonates, I'd love to hear from you.

Taking a moment to breath…
